Imi’s 101st Birthday

This month is Imi’s 101st Birthday. As always, Imi’s Birthday it is commemorated by all Krav MaGa lovers. Here at KMG it is a special occasion and a chance to reflect on who Imi was and the importance of his legacy.

The attached clip is a short message from Eyal.

Eyal Yanilov on Podcast Interview

On the 15th of May, Eyal’s interview at KravTalk.com went live. For those of you who haven’t heard it it’s a rare chance to learn about the early days of Krav MaGa when Eyal was a young Student and Imi was his teacher. Eyal also talks about the many countries he’s brought Krav MaGa to, the many high level Krav MaGa artists he’s taught and what’s in KMG’s future.

*Please note it may require a short sign-up procedure but it’s totally worth it!

Break-Falls and Rolls: How to hit the ground without the ground hitting you

By Eyal Yanilov

In our modern world falling is a common event. As often as in early times (if not more), a person may finds him or herself on the way to meet mother earth in a head-on collision. The problem is that these days the ground is harder as it is so often made of bricks and cement. In Krav MaGa we always paid great attention to break-falling and rolling as part of the training, even from the beginning.

In many societies and countries people fall more often than they fight. Severe injuries may happen in falls. When Imi was teaching in the 60′s, 70′s and early 80′s, every warm up finished with some break-falls and rolls. But, when I started spreading Krav in Europe, many locations had no mats and many students were much older than we were used to in Israel – where most trainees started as teenagers. So we had to consider their needs and not put such an emphasis on reaching a high level of proficiency in the subject of “dealing with falls” early on.

Today when most places do have mats we can definitely give the subject the respect and time it deserves and train people on it as soon as we can. Naturally for grownups and older people we do some modifications in teaching and training these techniques, and we accept that it may take a bit more time until they do full rolls, complete hard-break-fall or soft break-falls in any directions. Among others things, we do “falling towards a wall” and rolling from low altitude (as from a squat or from one’s knees).

Regarding practicing throws and takedowns

In KMG we have several techniques for taking the opponent down, during a confrontation. Here, many times, especially when we have hard mats, we use a third partner to assist in holding the falling or thrown trainee, so meeting the ground will be easier – with more control and with extra care.

During the last training for instructors I did this month in Argentina and Germany, we exercised this teaching and training method, to minimize the impact with the ground. This is so we have less stress on the body, are able to train for longer periods of time and improve in the specific material for the G-Levels.

Well done KMG Latin America!

Our Latin America HQ is very active in promoting KMG in the area, especially in Argentina. Here you can see a clip made for a national TV station. Alberto Diomedi, our director in Argentina (who also heads the regional HQ), is presenting techniques for the benefit of the public.

This is sort of a “self-defense segment” seen on a weekly basis.

Alberto, with other instructors and students, directs and shows the audience how to avoid violent confrontation and how to deal with problems which can’t be avoided.

The techniques are accompanied by interviews in which Alberto explains what he’s doing.

A wonderful job done by Alberto and his team!

A Review of May

We’re happy to report that once again, May was a month filled with activity for KMG, with Eyal and our Global Team flying to every corner of the World to teach Krav MaGa.

Before we go on to talk about May, Tal Kvores and Peter Lakatos conducted a seminar and testing for over 200 students in Budapest on the last weekend of April. These numbers prove once again that KMG is the right source for those who are serious about Krav Maga.

About 25 instructors from Scandinavia participated in KMG’s three day periodical Instructors’ Further Education and Update Seminar in Sweden, led by Eyal. Training included mental preparation, determination, perseverance, controlled aggression and more.

In addition, about 70 people from different clubs took part in a one day Open Seminar. The seminar, which took place in all kinds of different locations, was led by Eyal with the assistance of Tommy Blom and the local HQ.

The last part of the GIC in Argentina, led by Eyal and Ilya Dunsky took place in Mar Del Plata and included participants from all over the continent, including Argentina, Bolivia, Venezuela, Uruguay, Colombia and Ecuador. It’s great to see KMG taking root in the Latin Continent.

The seminar was immediately followed by a Law Enforcement Instructors Course led by Ilya Dunsky. Congratulations to the seven new Instructors and the three new Assistant Instructors…

Adding to this, Eyal, Ilya and Alberto Diomedi also conducted Open Seminars and an Instructors Recertification – all in all, a full month of KMG Activity in South America.

In Nuremberg Germany, the final part of the GIC took place, led by Eyal and Ralf Ulbig and the level of the program was high.

Still in Germany, Eyal along with Tal Kvores conducted a seminar for 63 participants in Munich, which focused on Third Party Protection. At the end of the seminar, 45 people were tested.

KMG just finished a Seminar and Testings conducted by Tal Kvores in Croatia. Participants reported that they learned a lot and their KM is better for the experience!

Ze’ev Cohen, after recently receiving his Master Level went to England to conduct an Instructors Seminar. The participants were highly skilled, or, as Ze’ev put it, “La crem de la crem of the U.K”

Later this week, Eyal, Ilya Dunsky and Nick Maison will be taking the future Instructors of KMG UK on the last part of the GIC. Good luck!

In Holland, Tommy Blom completed the second part of the GIC. The instructors-in-training have shown significant progress and will soon be able to bolster the ranks of our Dutch instructors.

A huge Open Seminar, conducted by Eyal took place in the Czech Republic. Over 80 people with 35 vehicles participated in a “Road Rage” seminar out side of the largest mall in Prague. The event was followed by a
Law Enforcement seminar, and an Open seminar which focused on prioritizing threats, multiple opponents and defense against armed and unarmed attackers. The event was covered by local media. KMG Czech Republic HQ also did a great job of organizing everything.

Due to popular demand, Eyal and Ilya have made their way back to Rome for yet another open seminar. This time, the participants took it to the next level, learning new techniques and methods of self-defense. Most importantly, none of them stayed dry!

What’s happening in June?

If you thought May was great you’re going to love June!

We’re going to have three GIC courses: in the Czech Republic (part 1), in Holland (part 3) and in Belgium (part 1).

Our Facebook Group just surfaced 3,000!

As we are closing this newsletter, our KMG Official Facebook group has reached the 3,000 member mark. Not bad for a year’s work.

What’s equally impressive is the number and quality of Facebook pages and groups being established by local KMG branches around the world.

I would like to take this opportunity and personally thank the hundreds of friends who took the time to send me happy birthday greetings over Facebook – I was deeply touched.
